An Inlaid Mahogany Hepplewhite sideboard, New York, c.1790

DEACCESSIONED

This is a square sideboard which is embellished with a magnificent suite of figured mahogany circles and ovals. The squareness of the form is complemented by the roundness of the inlays on all the doors and the beautifully figured mahogany. As one approaches the piece, the delicacy of the fine inlay begins to reveal itself, adding to the unexpected charm of the piece. Note the line inlay in the legs, and the triple line inlay around all of the ovals.  Also line inlay around the top edge, lower edge
of the casepiece and around the central drawer. Ivory escutcheons
beautifully complete an elegant composition. The end doors
reveal three drawers each. Originally, there was a simple
shelf at each end, however a prior owner had beautiful dovetailed
drawers built with matching figured mahogany (see details
one
& two).
While these drawers could be removed, we felt that although
not part of the original piece, they are extremely functional
and beautifully done, so we have decided to leave them as
is. They are great for silverware, etc.

Aside from the inclusion of the above drawers behind the original end doors, this piece is in superb original condition with no repairs or restorations.
