A Black Lacquer Queen Anne Japanned/Chinoiserie Dressing Table, England, c.1750

Scroll down for 7 more photos

This is a rare form in a decorated lacquer surface, and a delicate table that is certainly a survivor. The original top retains its first decorative Chinoiserie embellishments, as do the drawers, sides, and back. Looking at the images below, one sees a voluptuously shaped skirt with strong hoofed Queen Anne cabriole legs. It’s enjoyable to see the gentle warpage which has occurred over time to its original top. The cut-out in the front apron is quintessentially Queen Anne and very smartly stylized. The drawer layout is typical of this form. Black lacquered furniture with Chinese motifs is well illustrated in the literature (see below). A related worktable can be found in our inventory (see sw00385). The brasses are period replacements, however, no new holes were drilled, and all parts are original. (See construction images.) These pieces are very decorative alongside an upholstered chair or against a wall, accommodating lamps nicely.
